5. It looks like a Ford Escape.

6. Ford Escapes are nice, but they're not Land Rovers.

1. It's a crossover now. The Evoque showed they can still be good off road.

2. Debatable, but just LR/RRs new styling.

3. Air suspension bro, ever heard of it? Its probably in low aero setting in that picture.

4. Because it's a Discovery?

I'm perfectly OK with unibody SUVs. That's actually one of the reasons I like my WJ Grand Cherokee. Compared to other SUVs I looked at like the 4Runner, Pathfinder and Disco II—all body on frame—the Grand Cherokee is way more comfy inside, despite being smaller on the outside and much lighter weight than the others.

Then again, the Grand Cherokee has grown much larger and heavier since then.

1. So are the Jeep Cherokee (yes, including the XJ) and Grand Cherokee

2. So are the modern Cherokee and GC

3. That can probably be changed with the turn of a dial or press of a button

4. Neither do any other modern LRs that aren't Defenders.

I'm Ok with unibody Suvs too, I love the 2nd gen Honda CRV. But Thats not what a discovery should be, it goes against the very essence of the model

Having driven a Disco II which has a pathetically cramped interior (but plenty of headroom!) for the overall size of the vehicle, I'm ok with doing something to make more room inside.

Isn't the Range Rover unibody?

Well I mean. We can't ONLY do things based on what last-gen cars did. Do you want to go back to hand crank starters? Folding windshields? Horse-drawn wagons? Sucking poison out of a snakebite? Leeches? Teddy Roosevelt? C'mon now.

Pretty sure this is actually the replacement to the old LR2/Freelander. This is the Discovery Sport , NOT the LR4/Disco.

The new LR4/Disco will probably be a bit less soccer-mom-ish than this, but I would expect just more of the same - unibody, electronic, and rounded/"civilized". Sadly I guess it's what sells.

To be Mr. Pedantic, yeah, almost all cars are better as a unibody UNLESS you need the following:

1. Dirt cheap body panel replacement

2. High towing capability

3. Don't care about weight

Which is exactly what you need in an offroad car (or a cop car).

I would see this more as "the range rover isn't about driving offroad anymore."

Cmon Demuro, dont be that guy. Do this to a Wrangler, and its success, will drop. Bad.
You can still fold the windshield you can still suck poison. The Wrangler is awesome, because they've kept it like this, and its why it is so Offroad capable. Tons of kits you can put and not cut the wheel wells.

Demuro you're just being like those guys that made the 2015 mustang not look like one anymore from the front.

Leaded gas? 13-inch wheels? Bias ply tires?

No, you make a good point. However I don't think that body on frame is necessarily a condition for off-roading. Remember the Cherokee and Grand Cherokee have ALWAYS been unibody and they're pretty damn capable.

The real key point here is that the car we're seeing isn't the Discovery — I suspect the Discovery Sport is the LR2 replacement, whereas the next Discovery (no "Sport") will replace the LR4.

Well thats true. The older cherokees could do pretty much anything a Stock Wrangler could. But the newest G Cherokee can't. the Aproach angles and all that equals disaster.

I'd be very surprised if this gets air suspension.
